The ATA-USB adapter appears to be going bad.  I'll try
the installer again after settling the hardware question.
Sorry for the confusion.

Sven,

Hmm... this looks like USB does not work correctly on your machine. Are there any USB-related error messages on the Kernel Log when you try to mount the device? Do other USB devices work on that computer, e.g. USB flash memory?

Other USB devices work; USB on the computer appears OK.
From testing on other systems, the problem is with the target
hdd or the ATA-USB adapter connecting it.  In any case,
nothing to do with A2.  USB is a good concept but
certainly not always as straightforward as the good old
floppy diskette.

I have another hdd which works.  It needs to be partitioned,
formatted and have NO installed before tackling A2.  Perhaps
later.

That could be helpful.  I'll review the Init again.
