in the last weeks there were more spam postings than serious ones. I find this quite annoying.

How is spam handled?

For one project I used the engine phpBB.
They implemented a simple and effective protection against spam such as this forum:
Moderated the first 3 posts of the user (or another number, it is set in the settings).
This problem is really overshadows all the community and forum.

We also use the phpBB engine for the Astrobe forum and using the same technique have not had a single instance of spam getting through the defences. A forum moderator should also prevent bogus registrations with their associated weblinks etc. We use an addon that links to the "Stop Forum Spam" database which currently intercepts ~40 bogus attempts to register on the forum every day. A quick search indicates that the "simple machines forum" engine used in this forum does have similar capabilities as described here:

today I registered on another forum, which also uses SMF (http://www.java-gaming.org/index.php).

It poses some measures against spam bots registering. Please think about something similar.
